Krohn, officially named Wiese & Krohn, is a traditional Port wine house founded in 1865 by two Norwegian cousins, Theodor Wiese and Dankert Krohn. The house is particularly known for its Tawny and Colheita ports, which are single-vintage tawny wines aged for a long time in oak barrels. Krohn's cellars have held exceptionally old reserves dating back to the 19th century. An important vineyard for the house is Quinta do Retiro Novo in the Rio Torto valley in the Douro, which also provides the grapes for its highly regarded Vintage Ports.
A significant change in ownership occurred in 2013, when The Fladgate Partnership, the group behind Taylor’s, Fonseca, and Croft, acquired Krohn. In 2023, however, Krohn changed owners again when the Portuguese WineStone Group acquired both the Krohn brand and Quinta do Retiro Novo. Krohn is therefore now part of the WineStone Group.
A particular strength of Krohn continues to be its Colheita Port: this single-vintage wine is aged for a long time in wood barrels before bottling, which gives it the nutty, dried fruit, caramel, and spice notes typical of tawny, as well as great complexity.
In this Master Class, you will get to explore these magnificent Krohn Port wines under the guidance of Krohn’s Export Manager. Joana Alonso is a qualified winemaker who has been working in the industry for two decades. She has international experience from China, Macau, and England, and possesses a profound understanding of the Douro region and Port wine traditions. During the lecture, 4 different Port wines will be tasted, the last of which is a magnificent 1961 Vintage port.
